Prototypo is an ambitious project by "two passionate guys in a garage" who want to build an open-source typeface prototyping tool based almost entirely on slider controls with a dash of code.
The team says they spent five months building a functional prototype, which uses historical rules and mathematical proportions to create pleasing fonts and to allow users to manipulate a complete typeface all at once, designing everything evenly.
The main goal for the Kickstarter seems to simply be funding the work that's going into it - as mentioned earlier, the tool will be open-source, so everyone will have access to it and the issue tracker once funding is complete.
Backers can also opt for packages that allow access to beta builds after the end of the campaign, directly from Prototypo servers. An exciting stretch goal would allow designers to host their fonts for use on a limited number of domains.
The campaign ends 29 days from the time of writing, and plans delivery of backer rewards by the end of May.
