Today's type gym letter is W. For this letter I wanted to try out a style that I think will catch on very soon. It's sort of an evolution of flat design, where shadows and very subtle gradients define some depth, but there's an added measure of depth offered by a slight thickness to the flat forms, as though they were made of a thin sheet of plastic.
Each side of the W actually has its own gradient that I tried to keep subtle to give the perception of depth without becoming too tacky. The hard shadow between is to emphasize the structure of the letter, where the back half of the W was folded down from its attachment point with the front.
